The Wallabies: the nickname dates back to Australia's first rugby tour of the United Kingdom. The British press tried to dub the Australians the "Rabbits". Not wanting to be characterised as pests (as rabbits are considered there), the Australians responded by choosing a marsupial native to their country as their emblem: the wallaby.
