Worn during the tournament held in Spain, the — of course — red shirt emblazoned with the legendary “CCCP” lettering and the Soviet crest marked the team’s return to the World Cup stage after a long absence, their previous appearance dating back to the 1970 World Cup.
Led by an unusual trio of managers, with Konstantin Beskov joined for the tournament by Valeri Lobanovsky, head coach of Dynamo Kyiv, and Nodar Akhalkatsi, coach of Dinamo Tbilisi, the USSR fell to Socrates and Zico’s Brazil in one of the most technically brilliant and memorable matches of the tournament (1–2).
Dassaev and Chivadze’s teammates nevertheless advanced from the group stage to the second round, where they faced Belgium and Poland.
Belgium was defeated 1–0 thanks to a goal from Oganesian. However, in their final group match, the USSR failed to score against Poland, and the 0–0 draw sent Boniek’s teammates through on the strength of their 3–0 victory over the Red Devils.
As a bittersweet consolation for the Soviets, Dassaev was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
