Racing Lens, runners-up to Nantes in the 1976–77 season, strengthened their squad with the arrival of Didier Six ahead of the European competitions awaiting the club. With Daniel Leclercq commanding the defence and a midfield that had led the team to UEFA Cup qualification, Racing Lens was about to experience one of the most epic matches in French football history.
After getting rid of Malmö of Sweden, it was Lazio of Rome who faced Lens in the round of 16. Defeated 2-0 in the first leg, Richard Krawczyk's teammates, known as Zébulon, threw themselves at the Italian goal, carried by a Bollaert crowd in top form.A first goal from Didier Six before half-time cemented their dominance. Didier Six was in fine form, scoring a second time in the 55th minute with a superb strike from 25 metres. Lazio were pinned back in their own half but held on until the end of normal time.
Extra time.
And then, boom, the Lens players blew the Italians away with a goal from Bousdira, Didier Six completing his hat-trick, and Djebali finishing the job with a brace.
